About the Show
Speak Atheist is an online show dedicated to discussing religion and religious topics. The hosts of the show are both atheists. The show is meant to be light hearted to poke fun at religion as well as inform people about the problems with religion. The hosts focus primarily on Christianity, since they were both Christians before becoming atheists.
The show airs almost every week. It started out to be a live call-in show, but the format was changed a few episodes in to go a different direction. The show is now prerecorded and focuses on showing the absurd beliefs that religious people have from the comic prospective of atheists. Serious topics are discussed as well as light hearted ones.
People can still send in questions from the contact section of this page and they will be addressed on the show. If people are interested in calling in, they still can, but it will be pre-recorded.
The show may go back to being a live call-in show. That will be announced on the website, the show, the Facebook page, and Twitter before it happens.
About the Hosts
Jaret Burkett - Host
I started Speak Atheist to educate other Christians who are questioning their faith. I was once a very devout Christian and I never had anyone I could talk to about my questions regarding my beliefs. I would talk to pastors and other leaders of my church, but no one could answer my questions. I did not know any atheists and I believed as many Christians do, that atheists are devil worshipers. I came to atheism on my own.
I look back and wish that I had a show like this to look at that is not afraid to point out the flaws in my beliefs. I want to be the light in the darkness that is faith. I want to be the voice of reason to those who are rational, but have never heard any ideas other than the ones from the pulpit. I am a busy guy, but I will talk to anyone who has honest questions about religion. I have been on both sides of the fence and the grass is much greener on the atheist side. If I can help one person break out of the bondage of faith, I will be happy.
Before I lost my faith, I was an extremely devout Christian with dreams to one day be a force for God in the world. I fasted 3 days a week. I read my Bible for hours each day. I was abstinent. I did not watch TV or listen to music. I did not drink alcohol or caffeine. I did not take drugs or medication. I used to preach to people on the streets and the UT campus. This all sounds fine, but I also judged everyone. I oppressed homosexuals and those who did not have faith as strong as my own. I did everything I could to push my own morals and beliefs onto other people. I looked at natural disasters and God’s judgment and assumed that everyone who died in these disasters was evil. I was a bad person and I was miserable.
I am now very happy and I treat everyone with kindness, at least until they start to oppress other because of the opinions of ancient barbarians. I feel I am a better person now than I have ever been and I try to be a better person every day. It is my goal to show others who are suffering from the plague of Christianity that there is another way. I want to make the world a better place and I feel that teaching people to use logic and reason is the only way to accomplish this.
